This is a diary of Miles Davis' life and music through incredible research work on the international press, complete with exhaustive discographies, biographical facts, interviews, and musical analyses.

The year 1959 was a transformative one in Miles Davis' life and career. Porgy and Bess is released. Kind of Blue is recorded and released, an album that will change the history of jazz, as well as the life of Miles. For the first time, the CBS television dedicates a special half-hour to his music. Recordings for Sketches of Spain also started in November. The most important magazines interviewed him, even those that are not strictly in the musical field. Many colleagues and critics come to see him as a kind of guiding light for modern jazz. But then, on a sultry August evening, the artist is beaten and arrested by the police under circumstances that illuminate the everyday racism of the time. And this last event, as it’s known, will mark the life of Miles, who from that moment will be drastically changed. Through careful analysis of all the available articles, we reconstruct the sequence of events as never attempted before.

The year 1959 is therefore an important turning point not only for Miles Davis, but for jazz in general. Above all, this volume wants to place the emphasis on how Miles Davis was now an intergenerational and universal icon, with an almost daily presence in the press; and how, after the beating, his presence in the media and his elevation as a symbol increased exponentially, acquiring colossal dimensions. Now the press, in addition to writing about his music and reviewing his concerts, speaks of him as a political phenomenon as well as fashion trendsetter. Each of the two hemispheres feeds the other. Miles becomes a media phenomenon as a giant of jazz, and his popularity increases because of his daily presence in the press—a combination that would seem calculated, but in reality it seems to be a synchronicity. In reconstructing his story and transferring it to print, we have chosen to publish this work ourselves. In this way we can proceed without editorial compromises.

Il 1959 è un anno fondamentale nella vita di Miles Davis, potremmo addirittura definirlo catartico.

Esce Porgy and Bess. Viene registrato e pubblicato Kind of Blue, un album che cambierà la storia del Jazz, oltre che quella di Miles. La CBS-TV dedica per la prima volta uno speciale di mezz’ora alla sua musica. Iniziano le registrazioni per Sketches of Spain. Le riviste più importanti lo intervistano, perfino quelle non strettamente musicali. Moltissimi colleghi e critici lo vedono come una sorta di guiding light del jazz moderno. Ma poi, in un’afosa sera di agosto, l’artista viene picchiato e arrestato dalla polizia in un atto di ordinario razzismo dai contorni quantomeno nebbiosi... E quest’ultimo evento, come è noto, segnerà la vita di Miles, che da quel momento sarà diversa. Attraverso attenta analisi di tutti gli articoli disponibili si ricostruisce la sequenza degli avvenimenti come mai era stato tentato prima.

Il 1959 è quindi un importante anno di svolta per Miles Davis e per il Jazz in generale.

Ma con questo volume si vuole porre anche e soprattutto l’accento sul fatto di come ormai Miles Davis fosse un’icona intergenerazionale e trasversale, con una massiccia presenza sulla stampa. E, con il pestaggio subito, la presenza mediatica e l’assunzione a figura simbolica aumentano in modo esponenziale, acquisendo dimensioni ciclopiche.

Sulla stampa oltre a raccontare della sua musica, recensire i suoi concerti, si parla di lui come fenomeno politico, ma anche della sua nuova giacca di taglio italiano o delle sue macchine.

Nel gioco delle parti ognuno dei due emisferi alimenta l’altro. Miles è un fenomeno mediatico perché è un gigante del jazz, ma è anche sempre più popolare perché è quotidianamente sulla stampa. Un’azione combinata che sembrerebbe studiata a tavolino, ma invece non è così.
